Paul Pogba’s attempt to rebuild his career at Monaco is coming to an early end after the Ligue 1 club confirmed plans to terminate his contract following another injury-hit spell.
The former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder joined Monaco hoping to relaunch his career after serving a doping suspension.
But persistent fitness problems have prevented the 33-year-old from making the impact both sides envisaged.
Monaco said the objectives established when Pogba arrived had been “only partially achieved” and confirmed that his contract, which was due to run until June 2027, would be brought to an end.
Pogba is currently sidelined with a thigh injury shortly after recovering from a knee problem.
His latest setback proved another blow in what had been billed as a major comeback for the 2018 World Cup winner.
Despite the decision to part ways, Monaco praised Pogba’s attitude during his time at the club.
The French side highlighted his “remarkable mindset, determination and unwavering high standards,” adding that he continued to influence teammates positively even when he was unavailable to play.
How injuries derailed Pogba’s comeback plan
Pogba arrived at Monaco carrying both enormous experience and considerable uncertainty.
At his peak, the midfielder was one of the most recognisable players in world football, winning major honours with Juventus, Manchester United and the French national team.
His career, however, had already been heavily disrupted by injuries before a doping case pushed him further away from top-level football.
Monaco offered him an opportunity to start again.
The move was supposed to provide Pogba with regular football, a familiar environment in France and the platform to prove he could still perform at elite level.
Instead, fitness setbacks repeatedly interrupted his progress.
A knee problem limited his availability before the subsequent thigh injury again forced him out.
Monaco ultimately concluded that continuing the agreement was no longer the best option.
The club nevertheless made clear that Pogba’s influence extended beyond matchdays, praising him for sharing his experience and knowledge with other members of the squad.
The termination now leaves Pogba facing another major decision over his future.
At 33, the Frenchman must determine whether to pursue another club capable of offering him a route back into competitive football or consider bringing an extraordinary but increasingly disrupted career towards its conclusion.
What began as an opportunity for redemption at Monaco has instead become another chapter shaped by the injuries that have followed Pogba through the latter years of his career.
