The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The actor died on Sunday at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer, bringing an end to days of concern over his deteriorating health.
Daughter, Nollywood figures confirm Ogogo’s death
Ogogo’s death was confirmed by multiple sources, including the founder of the Best of Nollywood (BON) awards, Seun Oloketuyi.
Announcing the news on social media, Oloketuyi wrote:
“Taiwo Hassan Ogogo is dead. He finally lost the battle of life.”
The actor’s daughter, Kaira Taiwo, also confirmed the development during an emotional live session on Instagram, where she expressed grief over her father’s passing.
Ogogo’s death came days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance for their father after revealing that he was battling stage-four cancer. The family had disclosed that doctors could no longer continue chemotherapy due to his condition.
The development had sparked an outpouring of support from colleagues, fans and stakeholders in the entertainment industry, with many rallying around the veteran actor during his final days.
Ogogo was one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba cinema, with a career spanning decades. He was celebrated for his contributions as an actor, filmmaker and director, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Nollywood.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and public figures, who described his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s creative industry.
The actor is expected to be buried in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, according to announcements from his family and colleagues.
