Prosecutors in Los Angeles have charged Nick Reiner, the son of famous Hollywood director Rob Reiner, with murder over the deaths of his parents.

The 32-year-old is facing two counts of first-degree murder, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced on Tuesday. Prosecutors also listed a special charge, saying the killings involved more than one victim.

If found guilty, Nick Reiner could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty. However, the district attorney said no final decision has been made on whether the death penalty will be sought.

The charges come two days after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead in their home in Brentwood, California. Police said the couple died from knife injuries.

Prosecutors also accused Nick Reiner of using a knife, describing it as a dangerous weapon. He is expected to appear in court after he is medically cleared by prison officials, where he will formally hear the charges and enter a plea.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as tragic and deeply painful.

“This case is heartbreaking, not just for the Reiner family, but for the entire city,” he said, while offering condolences to those affected.

Officials said autopsies are still being completed to confirm the exact cause and time of death. More details, including whether the weapon has been recovered, are expected to be revealed in court.

Rob Reiner is known for directing popular films such as This Is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men. His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography and production company.
