Rodri still the world’s best – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says Rodri remains the best player in the world as the midfielder prepares to face Tottenham on Saturday.

Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or, missed most of last season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament against Arsenal in September. He returned briefly but suffered another setback that ruled him out of pre-season and City’s 4-0 win over Wolves last weekend.

“He’s still the best player in the world until a new one is chosen in a few months,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday. “I have no doubts about his quality. He just needs training, minutes, and games to get back.”

Rodri’s return is a big boost for City, who finished third last season.

Guardiola also praised new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, who both scored on their debuts against Wolves, as well as young goalkeeper James Trafford, who made his first senior start. However, the coach has yet to decide who will be in goal against Spurs, with Ederson now fit again despite transfer links to Galatasaray.

“The new players bring energy. James brings his youth and passion for the club he grew up in. But it’s just one game. Against Spurs, we need to do better,” Guardiola said.

City also secured a major boost off the pitch as defender Ruben Dias signed a two-year contract extension on Friday, keeping him at the club until 2029.

“I am incredibly happy. City is where I want to be — competing for trophies at the very top. I love Manchester, it is my home now, and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else,” Dias said.
