Mohamed Salah scored a late goal as Egypt came from behind to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Zimbabwe took a surprise lead in the first half through Prince Dube, despite Egypt controlling most of the game in Agadir.

Egypt struggled to turn their chances into goals, with goalkeeper Washington Arubi making several key saves to keep Zimbabwe ahead at the break.

The equaliser came in the 64th minute when Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush fired into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

As the match moved into stoppage time, Salah showed his experience by reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box and finishing calmly to secure all three points for the seven-time champions.

Salah, who is yet to win the AFCON title, was heavily involved throughout the game and created several chances for his teammates in the first half.

Egypt will now face South Africa in their next Group B match on Friday in Agadir. Zimbabwe will take on Angola in Marrakesh.

The win gives Egypt a strong start as they chase an eighth AFCON title
