Liverpool forward Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after breaking his left leg, the club has confirmed.
The Reds said the 26-year-old suffered an ankle injury that included a fracture to his fibula. While no return date has been given, Isak is expected to be out for several months.
Isak was injured during Liverpool’s match against Tottenham on Saturday. He came on as a substitute and scored, but was hurt in a challenge from defender Micky van de Ven moments after taking the shot. He was unable to continue and had to be helped off the pitch by medical staff.
Liverpool confirmed that the Sweden international has “successfully undergone surgery”.
Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer for a club-record £125m. He has scored three goals in 16 appearances since arriving in September, including two in the Premier League.
The injury is another setback in what has been a difficult season for the striker. He had injury issues before leaving Newcastle and only completed his move to Liverpool on deadline day.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is expected to speak about Isak’s injury at his press conference on Tuesday morning.
