Liverpool’s record signing, Alexander Isak, is set to make his debut on Wednesday when the Premier League champions face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield.

Manager Arne Slot confirmed the £125million striker will be in the squad but said he will not play the full 90 minutes.

“There is definitely a chance because he is in the squad,” Slot said. “It is 100 per cent sure he will not play 90 minutes. But it is already a Champions League game to look forward to and there could be playing time for him tomorrow.”

Slot noted that Isak’s main challenge is regaining full fitness. “He doesn’t have to prove he is good enough to play in the Premier League – he has already shown that at Newcastle,” he added.

The Liverpool boss also praised his side’s strong start to the season despite major summer changes and the loss of striker Diogo Jota, who died in July. The Reds have won all four league games so far.

“We are far above my expectations this summer,” Slot said. “When the schedule came out, we had Newcastle and Arsenal early on, so to have 12 points now is more than I expected. We can still improve.”

Slot also responded to critics highlighting the club’s spending. “People talk about £450m spent, but they forget we sold players worth £300m,” he said.
