President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for making it to the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
D’Tigress defeated Senegal 75–68 on Saturday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to reach the final for the fifth time in a row.
In a statement on Sunday, Tinubu praised the team for their hard work, discipline, and teamwork. He said their efforts have brought pride to Nigeria and earned them respect across the world.
“I have seen the focus and team spirit D’Tigress have shown throughout this tournament. These qualities have made our country proud,” he said.
The President also noted that the win means D’Tigress will now take part in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
He gave special praise to the team’s head coach, Rena Wakama, for her strong leadership. Wakama is the first woman to lead the team as head coach.
“I commend Rena Wakama for her great leadership. She continues to inspire the team both on and off the court,” Tinubu said.
