Nigerian media personality Toolz has sparked conversation among parents after publicly criticising the amount and difficulty of homework her young sons are being given at school. In an Instagram post, Toolz shared her surprise that tasks meant for foundational years seem unusually demanding, saying they feel more like “designing and defending full science projects” than simple learning activities.
Toolz suggested that at this early stage in education, children should be engaging with much lighter content like basic colouring and simple maths and questioned why the workload feels harder than expected. Her comments tap into a wider debate among parents about whether current homework loads are appropriate for young learners.
Across Nigeria, other parents have also voiced similar concerns online, with some saying that children are sometimes given multiple assignments per day, leaving pupils feeling overwhelmed rather than genuinely engaged with the work.
Educational experts often note that homework should reinforce classroom learning without causing undue stress, and there’s a broader discussion about balancing academic rigor with children’s well-being.
