VIDEO: Nigerian cat gives birth to rare two-faced kitten, scientist reveal how it happened

A Nigerian man has gone viral after sharing a video of his cat giving birth to a bizarre two-faced kitten.

The clip, posted online, shows the man carefully holding the tiny feline, which appears to have two complete faces — a phenomenon so rare it has captured the attention of animal lovers and scientists alike.

Wildlife researcher and biologist Arojinle weighed in on the case, explaining that the kitten is not “two-headed,” but a Janus cat, named after the two-faced Roman god Janus.

He said the unusual appearance is caused by a protein called SHH (Sonic Hedgehog), which controls how facial features develop in embryos.

“If the protein is underproduced, the eyes may form too close together, or facial features may be flat or absent,” Arojinle explained. “If it is overproduced, it can lead to duplication of facial features — two noses, two mouths, or even multiple eyes — but the kitten usually shares one brain, skull, and set of organs. That is what we are seeing in this case.”

While fascinating, such kittens often face serious health challenges and rarely survive for long due to breathing, feeding, or neurological difficulties. However, there are exceptions: Frank and Louie, a famous Janus cat, lived to the age of 15, earning a Guinness World Record for longevity.

The video has sparked a flood of reactions online. One Twitter user, @raji_abduljelil, wrote, “This is really amazing.” Another, @aniky_bee, added, “We will learn by force 😀 Thank you, teacher 🥹🙏.” Some users expressed concern for the kitten’s survival, with @muphyk_ commenting, “Nature is beautiful and amazing but painful — the kitten will die soon 😭😭.”

The tiny Janus cat has now become an unexpected star of the internet, reminding viewers just how strange and incredible nature can be.
