Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi says he is eager to return to football after undergoing emergency surgery and being placed in a coma for treatment.

The Nottingham Forest forward suffered a serious injury during his team’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City after colliding with the goalpost. Though he continued playing for a short time, doctors later discovered he had a ruptured intestine. He was quickly taken in for surgery and placed in an induced coma to help his recovery.

The 27-year-old is now awake and recovering well. However, he is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Awoniyi, who also plays for the Super Eagles, shared an emotional message on Instagram, thanking his supporters and giving an update on his health.

“This has been one of the hardest seasons of my career,” he wrote. “But I’m grateful to God for keeping me alive, smiling, and recovering well.”

He also thanked his teammates, coaches, medical staff, and Nottingham Forest fans who have supported him throughout his ordeal.

“Your visits to the hospital meant a lot. I wish the team the best in the final games of the season. Keep pushing—I’ll be cheering you on.”

He ended the message by showing appreciation to fans back home in Nigeria.

“To everyone who prayed for me and sent messages—thank you. I feel your love every day.”

Awoniyi’s message has sparked kind words from fans and fellow players, many of whom have praised his strength and wished him a quick recovery.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest beat West Ham 2-1 on Sunday to remain in seventh place in the Premier League, level on points with Manchester City, who still have a game to play. Forest will face Chelsea in their final match of the season—most likely without Awoniyi on the pitch.
