BBNaija director Gbenga Kayode debunks claims that reality show is a political distraction
The director of the popular reality television show Big Brother Naija, Gbenga Kayode, has firmly dismissed long-standing allegations that the program was deliberately designed as a tool to distract Nigerians, particularly the youth, from pressing national issues.
For years, critics and social commentators have accused the show’s organizers of using the highly engaging reality format to shift public attention away from governance, especially when the broadcast timeline coincides with critical political or election periods.
“To be very honest, we never approach Big Brother Naija show from the angle of politics or distraction. People definitely have assumptions that are not true.”
An apolitical social experiment
Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativiTea podcast, Kayode emphasized that BBNaija is entirely apolitical and carries no hidden agendas. He explained that the core concept of the show is rooted in human behavior and social dynamics rather than politics.
According to the director, the production team simply sets up a controlled environment to see how a diverse group of individuals interacts under specific conditions, without predicting or manipulating the outcomes to serve outside narratives.
