Actress and producer Bolaji Ogunmola has issued an apology to the Yoruba community following public backlash over a controversial scene in her film that featured a derogatory remark about Yoruba women.

Earlier reports had gone viral over a clip from the movie that captured actor IK Ogbonna delivering offensive lines, prompting threats and criticism that led Ogunmola to temporarily deactivate her social media accounts.

In her apology, Ogunmola took full responsibility for the distress caused, emphasising that she never intended to disrespect her tribe. “First of all, I want to apologise to the well-respected Yoruba people for this error. The insult and threat to life and livelihood I have experienced in the last three days has been extremely disturbing,” she said.

She explained that the film, produced three years ago, was meant as a comedy exploring inter-tribal disagreements that ultimately resolve in love and unity. Ogunmola stressed her pride in her Yoruba heritage, adding: “I am Yoruba, omo Ibadan ponbele ni mi. I take full responsibility and sincerely apologise to my people and lovers of my work.”

Despite the apology, some social media users remain sceptical, questioning why she did not intervene during filming or address the issue sooner.
