President Bola Tinubu has showered praises on the Super Eagles, describing Nigeria’s bronze medal victory at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco as a testament to the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

The Eagles, who fell short in the semi-final against host nation Morocco last Wednesday, bounced back in spectacular fashion to defeat Egypt 4-2 on penalties in Saturday’s third-place playoff. The Nigerian team dominated regular time but had to rely on spot-kicks to secure the hard-earned medal.

In his congratulatory message, President Tinubu said:

“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.

However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco. Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”

The President’s statement applauds the team not just for the victory but for showing the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit that define Nigerians. His message comes as a reminder of the nation’s pride in its football heroes, even in the face of earlier disappointment.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, signed off the statement on January 17, 2026.
