The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a record prize fund of $10.4 million for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the highest in the tournament’s history.

According to the new breakdown, the winning team will receive $3.5 million — a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded to the last champion. The runner-up will get $1.2 million, while the third and fourth-place teams will take home $700,000 and $600,000 respectively.

Teams that make it to the quarter-finals but do not progress will each receive $450,000. Countries finishing third or fourth in their groups will earn between $200,000 and $300,000, depending on the group format. Even the teams that finish last in five-team groups are guaranteed $200,000 each.

CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, said the increased prize pool is part of CAF’s broader effort to grow African football.

“This increase in prize money will support local players and help make African football stronger and more competitive on the global stage,” he said.

Motsepe added that CHAN continues to play a key role in CAF’s strategy to attract more fans, sponsors, and international attention.

The 2024 edition of CHAN — officially known as the CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 — will be the first to be hosted by three countries. It will run from August 2 to 30, 2025, with 19 teams participating, including Nigeria, defending champions Senegal, former winners Morocco and DR Congo, and other strong sides like Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.
