Hull City are on the verge of signing Nigerian international Semi Ajayi on a free transfer following his release by West Bromwich Albion.

Ajayi, 31, became a free agent after his contract with West Brom expired at the end of the 2024/25 season. He is now expected to join Hull City as they rebuild their squad under new manager Sergej Jakirovic.

According to Hull Daily Mail, the Championship side is in advanced talks with Ajayi, and both parties are close to agreeing personal terms. If the deal goes through, he will move to Hull’s MKM Stadium as a free agent.

Ajayi spent six seasons at West Brom, making 170 league appearances, including 33 in the Premier League during the 2020/21 campaign. He joined the club from Rotherham United in 2019 after starting his career at Arsenal.

The Super Eagles defender fell out of favour at West Brom last season, as the club finished 9th in the Championship, just four points short of a playoff spot. The team also went through managerial changes, with Carlos Corberan leaving in December for Valencia.

Now, Ajayi could be a key part of Jakirovic’s plans at Hull. The new manager took over after Ruben Selles was sacked in May. Jakirovic previously coached Turkish side Kayserispor in the second half of last season.

Bringing in Ajayi is seen as a strong move by Hull, who narrowly avoided relegation last season. He would add experience and depth to their defence, competing with players like Sean McLoughlin, Alfie Jones, John Egan, and Charlie Hughes.

Local reports describe the signing as a smart free transfer for a team looking to stabilize and push forward next season.

Ajayi has 43 caps for Nigeria and brings international experience to the Tigers. His addition could help solidify the backline and offer leadership to the squad.

Hull City fans will be watching closely as the club aims to finalize the deal in the coming days.
