Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, has undergone a life-saving amputation of his left leg.
The 81-year-old had a three-hour surgery in Cebu, Philippines, after doctors found a dangerous blood clot. His son, Thomas Markle Jr, said the condition developed quickly and left his foot turning blue and then black.
“There was no option,” he said. “The doctors told me it was life or death, so the leg had to go. My dad is being very brave.”
Markle, a former TV lighting director, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday and is now in intensive care. Doctors say the next few days are critical as they monitor the risk of infection.
Thomas Markle has lived permanently in the Philippines for years. He has been estranged from his daughter, the Duchess of Sussex, since 2018 when she married Prince Harry.
