American filmmaker and actor Sam Levinson has responded to criticism over the OnlyFans storyline in the season three premiere of Euphoria, which focused on Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie.
The episode, which debuted on Sunday, drew backlash from viewers who took issue with the narrative choices surrounding Cassie. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Levinson explained that the storyline intentionally incorporated a level of absurdity and humor to create a layered perspective.
“Cassie has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it. What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion. The gag is to jump out, to break the wall,” Levinson said.
The filmmaker emphasized that the scene’s comedic and surreal elements were deliberately designed to balance the character’s fantasy with external perspectives, highlighting the show’s signature blend of drama and dark humor.
The Euphoria season three premiere continues to spark conversation among fans and critics alike, demonstrating the show’s continued cultural impact and willingness to challenge storytelling conventions.
