R&B and hip-hop star T-Pain has revealed that protecting his children’s future was the major reason he sold his music catalogue in a deal reportedly worth $100 million.

The singer, known for hits including Buy U a Drank, said the changing economics of the music industry influenced his decision, particularly the decline in revenue from streaming platforms.

Speaking during a Twitch livestream, T-Pain said artists were never properly consulted when streaming transformed the way music was consumed and valued.

Why artists are selling their catalogues

T-Pain explained that he did not want his children to depend on an industry where the value of recorded music could continue declining.

“You think I want to leave that to my kids?” he said, questioning whether he should leave his family’s future tied entirely to an unpredictable music business.

The singer sold his catalogue to HarbourView Equity Partners in 2025, saying at the time that the partnership would help preserve the legacy of his work.

Catalogue sales have become increasingly common among major artists as musicians seek financial security, especially as streaming continues to reshape the business model of the industry.
