Nollywood’s favorite Toyin Abraham surprised fans recently when she admitted she can’t speak her own native Edo tongue. Yes, you read that right. Despite hailing from Auchi, Edo State, she revealed that she doesn’t know “a bit” of Edo.
Speaking with TikToker Jarvis at the premiere of Ginger, she shared:
“I can’t speak Edo. You know I was born and brought up in Yoruba land. And I married a Yoruba man. So I’m practically Yoruba. I can’t even speak Edo. One bit. But there’s no Yoruba I can’t speak.”
She explained the reason: growing up in a Yoruba environment and marrying a Yoruba man shaped her linguistic identity.
So, while she may be Edo by birth, Toyin says she’s fully Yoruba by tongue.
